Rack Layout Options

Rack layout options explained

All of these live in the storage flyout of a selected rack area. The solver re-runs and the counts update the moment you change any of them.

  • Min Aisle Width -- the narrowest aisle the layout may use, in inches. Default 120. Pick it from your forklift: very narrow aisle trucks run around 60", reach trucks around 96", counterbalanced trucks around 108" or more.
  • Orientation -- whether rack rows run horizontally (left-right) or vertically (top-bottom) across the area. Typically you want the rack to point in the direction of the dock doors to reduce travel time and increase productivity
  • Alignment -- which edge of the polygon the solver favors when placing pallet rack. left = top when the rack is horizontal and right = bottom.
  • Elevation -- which rack elevation (the vertical beam-level configuration) this whole area uses. Individual bays can override this selection via the Select Rack tool.
  • Single | Double Deep -- the depth mode: standard single-deep rows, or double deep where pairs of racks sit back-to-back two positions deep. In double deep mode, "Allow non-quads" permits leftover shapes that aren't full four-deep blocks, and "Allow triples" additionally permits three-deep leftovers.
  • Allow Singles -- whether the layout may place freestanding single rows where a back-to-back pair doesn't fit. If drawing a single against the wall of a building produces a more optimal pattern, the solver will allow a single against the wall ignoring this setting. Otherwise, tall freestanding singles are a real-world stability consideration, which is why this is a choice and not automatic.
  • Space Evenly -- attempts to allocate leftover space evenly among aisles within a building bay
  • Fixed Aisle -- holds every aisle at exactly the Min Aisle Width; leftover space is absorbed in the flue space between rack rows instead of widening aisles. Turning it on forces Space Evenly.
  • Force cols in flue -- requires building columns to land in the flue space between back-to-back rows. Only available when the column actually fits: if the column plus its clearance is wider than the largest standard row spacer, the toggle locks and its tooltip shows you the numbers.
  • Force bay removal -- lets the solver shorten or remove individual bays to work around building columns, instead of only shifting rows. In some column layouts this is the only way to produce a lawful layout. If that's the case, the toggle will be locked in the 'on' position
  • Ignore building cols -- generates the layout as if the columns weren't there: rack draws straight through steel and the counts deduct nothing. This is a demonstration mode -- useful for showing why a requested layout doesn't work -- not something to design against.
  • Tunnel / Tunnel Spacing -- carves tunnel corridors through the rack rows at the spacing you set (default 150 feet), using the tunnel elevation you pick -- a taller opening framed by elevated beams so traffic can pass through the row. Individual tunnel bays can be overridden with the Select Rack tool.
  • Overrides list -- once any bays carry per-bay overrides (from the Select Rack tool), the flyout also lists each overridden bay, with a "reset all bays" link to clear them all at once.
